Follow the story into the machinery.
Stories as relational technology and a cognitive map of relation show how a social environment is connected and help listeners find routes through it. This transmission follows that map into the manufacture of the Expected Human, the patterned outside, and the machinery that sells a route back toward the norm it invented.
Grounded in Maya Chacaby's Week 2 teaching route, with Sylvia Wynter, Dian Million, and Kim Anderson named where their concepts enter.
Signal traces
- Stories give us routes, not roots. Earth, water, plants, animals, Spirits, ancestors, humans, responsibilities, and consequences travel through the social map together.
- The official human costume is invented and impossible. Nobody fits; punishment is unequal, and privilege changes who gets corrected, watched, abandoned, or believed.
- The patterned outside is manufactured through targeted abandonment, surveillance, silencing, withheld resources, and the astonishing institutional confidence to blame people for what was withheld.
- The trauma economy runs an ugly little business model: wound them, then sell the rescue back as movement toward white normalcy.
- Survivance keeps active presence moving through a cycle: Resist the colonial bullshittery. Reclaim teachings and relations. Construct present-tense Indigenous possibilities. Act with a viable possibility beneath you.
